Dear Tokai Users,

hi everyone, I'm from Italy and I'm currently wondering about swapping a Schecter 006 Blackjack with the following Tokai Custom Edition.

Now, I'm pretty sure the guitar is 100% original in its parts, however I can see some minor differences between this one and the other I've seen surfing through this website or the Web.

In particular, my doubts regard the bridge, which looks pretty much like the standard Ayers Rocker V, but without the script "Ayers Rocker V".

Furthermore, the pickpus too have no logo on them, as the machine heads don't have the "made in japan" signature.

Now, the S/N on the back says 211328.

Could this possibly date back to 1986?

All the other specs look like the other Tokai CE I've seen, so I'm quite sure the guitar is orginal; do you think that some parts (like PUPs) may have been changed through the years?

Next come the photos...

Many thanks in advance to any expert who could give me a hint.

Happy Tokaing ;)

Welcome to the forum !!! Thought i'd give you a shout out in welcome, those Custom Editions are hard to nail down. I'm not an expert by any means though. By serial number do you mean the number on the bolt on plate or is it somewhere else ?? The best pictures you can help with are some shots of the internals, the routing and the electronics, if they haven't been switched out the pots should give a date.

Hello, thank you for your reply!

Yes, the serial number refers to the numbers on the bolt on plate, at the end of the neck where it is attached to the body, see the pic:

Now, I don't know if I can provide any pictures of the internals, as I haven't made the "deal" yet, and I don't want to touch anything as long as it isn't mine yet, even though I guess i wouldn't do any damage...

However, as stated before, the guitar really seems to be an original one, it also carries the wear and tear of the decades!

The only thing I really care for at the moment are the PUPs, as they take a good part in the sound...

Cheers

This is a difficult one. As far as I can see, the guitar looks legit. The scratch plate, neck, small dot markers etc are consistent with what I have and what I have seen before. However, I would expect to see "made in Japan" stamped on the machines.

I've seen many of these that are '86 onwards.

My instinct tells me it's not Japanese so may be a later '90s Korean model perhaps? A look inside would help!

Thanks a lot for your help Suki.

Now, as for the machine heads issue, if you take a look at this custom edition I found on the net, it looks pretty much like the one I have, and I assume this one is 100% genuine;

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/mem...-custom-edition-super-strat-rare-80s-mij.html

The fact is that the "MIJ" logo on the tuners isn't there too, and, aside for the PUPs, all the other specs match the mine.

Furthermore, i guess the S/N indicates an older model than mine, cause it's 208891 Vs. mine 211328.

Last thing, the seller told me the guitar dates back to 1985 : maybe these were the first custom edition models and the specs could vary a little compared to the later ones?

However, I think I'm gonna keep this one, 'cause it seems to be very well made, and it sounds good too ;)

Cheers

Hi Gionni,

I think the earlier custom editions and super editions had the script logo - I have a few of these. My understanding is that the changed to italics in '86.

Can anyone else out there verify?
