Hi

I'm looking to get one of those ES-335 TD like Tokai, i saw some pics on various websites and got confused by the exact name.. on some pages and catalogs it was saying Tokai ES-150 , and some others Tokai ES-135 ...

the one im looking to get is the sunburst Gibson Es-335/345/355 TD - like, with INLAYS on the fret board (NOT dots)

it was very annoying seeing many looking alike Tokai guitars on many different websites based in many different countries listing similar looking models but different references and names, so i got totally confused.. also some websites were not listing prices, some confirmed reseller told me that guitar new should be between 1000 and 1500 euros.

so is there a difference between those TOKAI ES-135 , ES-150 and ES-155 ?

i want the high end one

thanks for clearing this up

cheers

The model number, 135, 155 and so on are relative to price in Japanese yen, 135= 135,000 yen, 155= 155,000 yen. Have you tried looking at Tokai's website??

The model numbers changing is very very frustrating for us and for many people that speak to me on the phone and in store.

The guitars you are looking at are likely to be the same model but the with the price index linked model numbers (which have just recently changed again) are called different things.

So, an ES130 which has dots is now an ES145. The block inlay one you are after is an ES135, or more recently changed to ES150.

The ES130 used to be called an ES120 before that. As time goes buy and the RRP in Yen goes up, so the model number goes up.

I've spoken to Tokai UK about this - don't reckon they have any real influence at all on this, or so it seems.

You've found the right place to ask though.

soo.. if there is anyone selling that "block" neck inlays one ES135/ES150 , preferably in sunburst or classic red/cherry

please let me know.

im in france, the only (decent) local dealer selling Tokai in Paris has sold out almost all the Love Rock models he had in stock and the only one ES-335 like too (including one amazing LC 125 S SEB to me - a LesPaul Custom like for the price of a crapmade Gobson LesPaul "STUDIO" :p ) When i asked him about a Tokai ES135/150, he was not even sure he could get it and if he could ; there would be a delay of about 8 months.. He told me there is a huge demand for Tokai.. and Tokai is manufacturing their guitars keeping the same rythm.

but, also what is worrying me is.. am i gonna get the same warm woody tone out of an ES135/150 Tokai as from one "real" Gibson 335 TD ? :(

I have now enough of trust in Tokai, because the Love Rock i got is just an amazing guitar.. i hope their ES135/150 will be the same way.

thanks.

Can someone tell me please which is the cheapest nitro finished 335 copy in the Tokai range? Preferably blonde/natural with dot inlays. One day I must get one - GAS is a terrible thing. :-?

Looks great, but are the ES130s nitro finished?

Yep

Same as the ES120 I believe. But mine deffo is, they come with the sticker on the pickguard and the specs state its Nitro.

I believe they are the same as Fenders , Nitro over a poly sealer. There was quite an in depth thread on ES and Nitro finish on here a while back.

Plus you can smell it

OK, I wasn't sure. Richtone's adverts usually state when a guitar is nitro finished, but they don't mention it in the ES130 ad. I can't tell from your pics in the case - does yours have the UK headstock, complete with dimple/nipple?

Nowadays the ES 130/135 features a laqcer finish = the last coat is made from nitro.
LS 380 is the only Tokai model where all 3 coats (and the filler) are use nitro.

Mine is UK ( 3rd dimple ) I was going to order one from Japan but the total cost to the door of the cheapest I could find still came to ?1200

OK, thanks, that was helpful.

Is the nitro situation the same with the LS160S (formerly LS145S) Love Rock Goldtop with P90s? These are usually quoted as being nitro finished, but are they all nitro or just one coat of nitro on top of poly?

Well I always though the LS150 was Nitro, but looking at togps post, he says only the LS320 is all Nitro.

But one of my LS150s is all Nitro (it was stripped down to bare wood ), there is no poly under the Nitro , it has a Nitro sealer as well. It's 100% Nitro through to wood. I know this because my family own a car repair workshop and restore old vintage cars ( 1920's ) which only use Nitro.

You have to be well versed in H&S rules to spray Nitro and the guys who do the painting are experts on this form of painting.
