Hi,
some time ago I bought a Tokai Love Rock LS85S,
black LP with p90. Really love the feeling and the sound
of this guitar although the neck is rather chunky.
Had some help with the setup from a proguitarist and
everything was ok. Had some questions here:

Early this summer I got some problems with a ganglion cyst
in my left hand and an operation. Now I got problems with the
chunky neck and I would like to know if there?s an other Love Rock
model with p90 with a slimmer Gibson 60-neck.

Hello guitarowner, i don't think Tokai make a p90 model with a slimmer neck, its a shame about the cyst but you could have your neck reshaped. If you have any decent luthiers around you could ask them to help you out, Just a suggestion but it may help.

Is it feasible to reduce the size of a LP neck by sanding?

Mike

Maybe with a belt sander. Certainly not by hand. Seems to me they would have to shave it incrementally with a plane and then sand it smooth.

Yeah, sorry about my english. Sanding was definitely not the correct word.
A friend of mine got his LP 57 'RI shaved down.

Possible, but a very delicate job to be done by an experienced luthier. I've seen DIY jobs where the truss rod popped out the back of the neck!!

You're English is great! Sanding is perfectly correct

Sounds very risky to me. Surely it's better to keep looking for a guitar with a neck that's already the right size?

I agree it's very risky, but all the P90 equiprd LP's I've seen have pretty chunky necks, just like the '50's Gibson's they're copying. I would say just get one and try to get used to the neck, it might be different to what you normally play, but you'll soon get used to it. I used to like slim necks, but the fatter the better these days :D

I?ll talk to some luthiers and looking for advices.
The fat neck was no problem when I bought the guitar.
It?s now when the ganglion cyst was removed, a big scar.
Perhaps it?s getting better as time goes by.

Make sure you include running scales with your physical therapy (with your doctor's approval of course) Scar tissue is going to form from the surgery along with some atrophy of the muscles / connective tissue and once it sets up, that's it. If you go through your basic movements on the neck while you are healing up, it will help restore flexibility and dexterity.

Probably won't be comfortable but you'll be glad you did it later on. Glad to see you're on the mend.

That will heal and you will have no trouble at all. I nearly had my left hand torn off in a motorcycle accident and the guitar helped me get the movement back, guitar playing is great physio....

seeing as they are modeled on 1950's model LP's i would say it is a fairly fat neck. I wouldn't worry too much, i used to play only thin necked guitars because i have small hands, but now all mine are medium chunky LP's and once you are used to them you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

I was to "my guitarshop" today and talked with the owner
abouth the LoveRock with P-90.
He also had an cyst long time ago and plays thinner necks nowdays.
Asked him abouth a very wellknown luthier i Stockholm and got
the number and talked with him. He said that he could shape the
neck for me but he was overbooked and have no time until december
and the cost is rather expensive. Then I have 4 months to play and
have patience with my hand. As I was talking with the luthier I suddenly,
right to my nose, saw I black LP with white P-90`s!! On the wall a Greco
LP with P-90 was hanging. So I borrowed, lended the guitar for a few weeks
to compare and test this LP which have a thin neck.

Hi, I?m happy :) :)

I no more have any problems playing my Tokai.
It really helped to play the slimmer Greco a while and
after some time I gave it back. So my hand is ok and
it?s great. So right now I?m looking for 1 more LP with p-90?s,
medium to chunky neck. Any recommendations ??
