I’ve been reading a lot the last couple of days, I want a Japanese SG and seen this.

From what I have read so far, with the lack of serial number and shape of the control plate I believe means this was made by tokai in the early 90s.

The crown inlay has the rounded bottom bit, which I think suggests a later SS model. Also suggesting early 90s.

So am I right in thinking this is a 1989-1990 Greco ss600?

Thanks in advance for any help

Not sure. I had a 1979 SS500 years ago and sold it.

It was pancake construction.

I read that they did that for a while, but I can’t see the centre of a pancake in the photos of the guitar taken from (of) the body strap pin.

What was the neck like on your Greco? I’m wanting to find an SG with a big neck. Not like ridiculous, but not slim taper.

I’ve seen soooo many nice tokai/Greco/burny SGs being sold from Japan but trying to work out the neck size and shape is hard haha.

I have asked a few people and found a few definitive answers on a couple but not all

I can;t remember the neck profile. I tend to not care and just adapt to the guitar.

I do know that Japanese guitars in general have smaller necks since they tend to have smaller hands.

The fattest neck I ever had was on a 1919 Gibson L3 arch top round hole guitar. That thing was huge, but fun to play.

Also, what is the story on the inlays? The one you posted has the Gibson crown but most that I have seen have the Mint Collection H looking thing.

I’m not sure, this is what I’d read before assuming it was an SS600.

https://solidguitar.fandom.com/wiki/Greco_SS

It says that the name changed to SS63-55 in 1988, briefly back to ss600 in 1990 and then finally to SS-65 in 1992.

The crown inlay with the rounded bottom bit is referred to as ‘late era’

And I’ve read before that between 1989 and 1992 tokai made some guitars for Greco. The telltale signs so I understand are the shape of the control cavity and lack of serial number.

Although I’ve just noticed the closed ‘o’ in Greco on the one I’ve seen on eBay.

Hmm

The headstock inlay and no serial number for the Greco SS in your original post does seem to indicate it's from the early '90s. Shots of the PU and control cavities would be required to determine whether it was made by Tokai.

^^ Agree. Do your research. serial numbers, logo style, pick up cavity routing. These are all important clues to whether made by Fuji gen.

I’ve only owned 2 Greco’s. A 90s Mint Collection with P90s and my current ‘80 SS700. Both have/had a slim taper neck.

I’ve also owned a late 80s Burny SG that also had a slim taper neck.

I think the more recent Tokai SGs have a bigger profile.
