Hi, haven't posted for a while...
There have been several cases like this in the past years,
here's one previous notice from me,
http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=15316
At first I thought they were Frankensteins but there are simply too many about. Maybe Tokai bought some...
Looks real enough to me.
85 or later, Tokai basses look the same into the 90's (outside the US!) so it's almost impossible to date them exactly.
What is that "Oldies" decal doing?
Greco and Burny have made fine EB3s, stick with the mid 80's and you'll be alright.
What you AFAIK never get is the varitone switch, the Japanese replicas all use standard rhythm/treble switches. Shame! But there you go.

Hello Bob,
There could be a few reasons for the logo looking the way it does:
It's genuine- Tokai logos often have a very obvious transfer edge.
It's a repro decal on a genuine Tokai- not uncommon since many removed or replaced the original logo back when MIJ guitars were someting to be...
Just thought this might be of interest, I am not affiliated with them in any way but based on one purchase they seem like good guys.

Dear our Important Clients,
Thank you for your purchase from our Music-Trade.co.jp service or eBay.
We hope that...
In Japan it is legal to call an object Made In Japan even if it has been made partly in another country, like China.
This has been made very clear time and again...
Sorry, I don't know anything about this specific model.
There is a very small image in the 1984 Tokai catalogue here:

Hello there, I'd guess it's authentic since it has a typical Tokai gig bag and also not a model usually copied. I won't guarantee anything though!
It's impossible to say what might be wrong with the neck pickup. You should probably assume you will have to replace it.

The seller keeps up his class act in his other listing:

What's the use of having loads of sheet music if the naked girls won't let go of your guitar?
Hi Ian,
I'm fairly sure Tokai used flat head screw on knobs, strange really as they used split shaft pots.
IMO you won't hear the difference between an Orange Drop and a Mustard or paper in oil in this application. The ceramics are not very good though, I'd steer clear of them.
Scratchplate...
