Does anyone know if Tokai ever made guitars under/for the brand Challenge VP? :-?

I fancy having a dabble with a bass guitar. Money is a bit on the scarce side so I can't stretch to a Tokai :( Does anyone have any hints and tips on on what to buy and what to look out for? My knowledge of basses is less than zero!

Having made the big, big mistake :( , many years ago of selling my Tokai Strat, Father Christmas finally answered my prayers and brought me an 80's Goldsound Strat :D Its a gold colour, a finish I've not come across before. Has anyone else got one this colour?
