Thanks, Goldstar. It plays and feels really exceptional. The neck is the most comfortable I've found on any Strat or Strat copy. Incidentally, you asked about which Fender model these ST55's were based on. According to the Registry section of this site (well worth a look), it was the 1956-60 model.

Lovely looking guitar! Very similar to mine, which has a serial number beginning 168xx. Though interestingly mine has the ?The quality musical instruments of the world? decal. And it has a 5-way selector switch. I bought mine new in around 1985. And just to add a cautionary tale: I replaced the orig...

Thanks, Iain. I tracked down the STRATosphere shop on Ebay, but they don't have quite what I want. Nor do Allparts, or Axesrus (as I mention above).

But I appreciate the help.

Scratchplate for Goldstar

I wonder if anyone can help with this? I'm looking for a Parchment scratchplate for my Goldstar ST55 (c.1985), 8 screwholes. Axesrus only do them in 3-ply, which I don't want. There's a Dutch chap on ebay who supplies them, but only 1.5 mm thick, and ideally I'd like 3 mm. Any help with other suppli...

Hi Tech21, Good luck with the job. I won't be hearing the new pickups very soon: the guitar's with my tech for a re-fit, and the machine-heads I want are out of stock and on order. But when I get it back, I'll let you know! Thanks again for the heads-up re Ironstones (and Tony was every bit as helpf...

Hello again Tech21. Many thanks for contacting Tony. I've taken the plunge & ordered a set of the Gold grade pickups. They're going to be fitted to a made in Japan Squier Stratocaster.

Incidentally, I hope you post pictures of the ST50 when you have finished it.

All best,

Thanks for the reply, Tech21. I will certainly try to find out more about the Ironstones. As for the Strat ?quack?, it?s a term I?ve come across, used to describe the characteristic Strat sound when the pickup selector is at position 2 or 4. To my ears, it?s a slightly hollow, woody sound. There?s a...

Hi, Tech21 I?m afraid I can?t help re Fullerplast, but I am intrigued by your reference to the Vintage Ironstone Gold pickups. They seem remarkably reasonable in price, but you must rate them, to be putting them in the guitar. May I ask whether you?ve heard them ?live? (as opposed to the demos on th...

Thanks, David. I'll get the tech to retrieve that information when I have the guitar set up.

I remain really happy with the guitar & am very grateful to you for the initial alert.

All best, Del.

At a time when Japan has been hit by another earthquake, it seems frivolous to be discussing the finer points of a Japanese (or any) guitar, so I?d like to begin by sending my good wishes to anyone in Japan who is reading this & my hopes that you are safe. The Goldstar arrived today & my first impre...

I replaced the white scratchplate on my ST55 with a generic 8-screw black one bought from one of the guitar shops off Charing Cross Road (sorry, can't remember which one). No redrilling necessary.

Thanks, Diodibuh & Fury. I understand the slight note of caution in your response, Fury: as you say, there was only one picture. But the De Luxe tuners & the price swung it for me, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Last year I bought an ST40 off Ebay in similar circumstances & once I'd changed the ...
