I'm not 100% certain about this, but I'm pretty sure that the bass he used for years both with The Blockheads & later with Wilko was a Tokai without the scratchplate. I believe it was a Jazz. A couple of bass players I know told me that, & I'm sure I read something years ago. His current bass, the ...

Another two for the collection.
So, I've posted these pics elsewhere here, but in keeping with the idea behind this thread here are some shots of my 1984 Metallic Red TJB60 and my 1985 Black TJB45/60 (?), as well as the whole collection (including my 1983 Olympic White TJB45 ). http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p279/Bluenile32/To...

Very nice collection. Norman Watt-Roy wouldn't have played his Tokai for years if it wasn't up to the job. Mike Interesting! Which Tokai bass did NWR have then? I could only find one interview with him ( http://www.philbrodieband.com/muso_norman_watt-roy.htm ) in which he says that he used a...

Beautiful basses!!! Congratulations! Red one is great! I have exactly the same Tokai like your first - cream-one. Also without L - letter on a neckplate. It's also very lightweight. It's sound so good!! I had a problem with pickups, but now everything is ok. I had to change polarisation in one of t...

This guy's site is well worth a read: http://mrglyn.blogspot.com/2008/11/reducing-hum-screening.html He's currently removing necks from vintage acoustics using steam injection. :o Brave man! He's got bigger balls than I have.  Quote: "This is the radiation present all over the universe c...

Thanks Graham :) ! Yes, I'll have a look into that, although there's not much that you can actually shield on a Jazz Bass. The red one has brass plates underneath each pickup and one in the control cavity, to which everything is grounded ... http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p279/Bluenile32/Tokai%2...

My Beautiful Trio of 'Jazz Sounds' (lots of piccies).
So, having flipped over the Olympic White TJB45 'Jazz Sound ' (below), which I got in the summer (after owning numerous more prestigious and expensive basses  ), I decided to try and track down some more of these fine Tokai Jazzes to add to my small collection. http://i130.photobucket.com/albu...

:-? Well, I've never seen a Tokai logo of that size before - on a bass! It looks very much like on from a Tokai guitar !!! My guess would be that the original logo wore off (which they very often do, being mounted on top of the clear coat) and was replaced with this one!? This would also explain why...

Nice one :P ! Lovely rosewood on that fretboard (again). Seems that the Tokai factory certainly had access to some top notch timber in those days. Even a lot of today's more expensive basses don't have maple and rosewood that's as attractive as some of the examples we've seen here. What's more, 4.5k...

Hi All again. Couldn't upload here so tried putting link instead. This is my Sigma made by Tokai 1972. http://www.rezumaid.com/page222222.html It's the closest to the real thing ( sound and feel)I've ever played. Still think those jazzers are awsum. :)[/url] 8) Cool! I had a "CMI" branded Ric copy ...

:D Excellent pictures, excellent basses and excellent post !!! It's really interesting to hear your opinions on the tones of the three basses, doudoubass - thanks for sharing! You're fortunate to have three such 'high-end' models (a '60', an '80' and a '75') - they don't seem to be as common as the ...

Well, I didn't want to say too much about the optimistic opening price, in case it belonged to someone here  . Still, when you look at what else 650 quid would buy you (a mid-90s Fender American Standard Jazz bass, the pre-amp and pickups from a Sadowsky Jazz etc. etc.), then even that price d...
