Re the tuners - it's work to replace them with anything, easiest is to use the schaller that was used on the higher model SS's. You can use the Kluson's you mentioned, it's the same work as using Fenders... I've changed a few from Trap to Fenders - some details here; http://www.tokaiforum.com/viewto...

Looks like it has the signs of a higher model Silver Star judging by the tuners alone but without more pictures of the disassembled guitar it's anyone's guess... how much is the seller asking?

I think it may have depended a lot on the country and even on individual dealers selling them because I have three 1984 Strats all bought new that year in Toronto, a TST 50 and two 60's and all three came with the nylon tweed case with red interior, which I'm very happy I still have...

This is the second Silver Star recently that's been a bit of an oddity and it seems like other models, we still don't know all there is to know about the Silver Star's... but deferring to Peter's opinion is a sound choice. The more pictures you post the more informed the comments will be, post pics ...

To me that looks like a 1985 and a lower model, maybe a 38 judging by the tuners and saddles which both look original, someone will probably say post some more pics with the guard and neck off for a more conclusive answer...

The tokai email says;

"we did not know how we priced for the custom models at that time"

and

"right now we do not change the numbers"

If you care to check IMO there is ample evidence that in the early '80s they did change them.

I don't know why anyone would think painting a Fender style guitar neck a solid colour, especially black would be an upgrade. To me it denotes a cheaper model much like the Limited Series Strats that Tokai came out with. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i suppose. Use Japanese catalogs as a ref...

Sorry now I get it, you're hung up on it being a higher model and can't accept it's a base model, have a good day.

I'll make it easy for you -

You have a base model 38 with upgrades as reflected by the 48 sticker.

Odd number doesn't imply a custom order, factory runs of a different colour have 55 stickers, the point is the stick number reflects the extra charges for whatever they may be... custom orders, factory runs what have you.

If you upgrade a 36 (as the base model SS was pre *about '82) or a 38 (as the base model was *about post '82), by 10,000 yen - the the sticker would say 46 or 48. There are ton's of examples of STS50's with a 5000 yen upgrade for body colour that have 55 stickers... also plenty of 65 stickers out th...

Well it's early 80's for sure and the BB is for black, the numbers are something you'd have to read about..
