Re: what "TOKAI" meansl

Thanks for the information. It's a pity that there isn't more of a platform in Japan for people to add their knowledge, or detailed recorded history with inside anecdotes, like there is with Fender and Gibson. I've found this site the be useful, with some nice anecdotal history, but it's just one pe...

Re: what "TOKAI" means?

Well, since you're Japanese... I'm wondering: are there Japanese forums similar to this one? Which are the biggest ones? With Google translate it's possible at least to read them, and there may be good information there. Are you aware of articles (for instance in Japanese guitar magazines) with inte...

Re: Higher grade MIJ Strat w/ 12" fretboard radius?

I have a 91 Fernandes in CAR with a flatter fretboard radius. Pretty sure it's a basswood body and a nitro neck finish of all things. (Did acetone test 3 times before I believed it.) For early eighties, I was also thinking of Moon (not sure when they started). The Esparto Strats may also be slightly...

Re: EGF-1200 "Sunburst Lady"

And mine doesn't have a thick neck either, but then it's a later 1981 transition model (you can tell from the more orange binding, among other things). What makes it so good for me is the way it rings out unplugged, the sustain and the tone plugged in. Probably more luck of the draw than anything sp...

Re: Springy Sound under the hood Question

Note the slab board construction, not round laminate. That alone screams fake to me. I have no idea about recent Tokais, but I've never seen a vintage Tokai neck with slab board construction.

Re: Duds and other disappointments.

I can't really say I've noticed a lot of them with cracks. That would always be a concern if you're unsure if it's finish checking or not. There's lots of options, but for a good, inexpensive vintage MIJ, I love my 1978 Greco EG-900. These came stock with Dimarzio PAFs and mine sounds really great. ...

Re: Duds and other disappointments.

I've probably owned or played at the very least 50, probably more like 80 or more. I've never really come across a bad guitar per se, meaning, a guitar that couldn't be made good with a good setup or refret at most. What you do get is: One guitar being more resonant and lively feeling than the other...

I bought this Crews Strat from a store in Osaka in March or April. Last I checked, it was still on Ebay being offered at a huge markup. Those slimeball sellers are a nuisance at best, but worse than that they instill doubt about legitimate sellers from Japan as well.

My 1980 TE-80 has a Dimarzio PAF in the neck, so I can only speak for the bridge. The way I'd describe it is "raunchy". I A/B'd it a while back against my Kelly tele with Duncans and Lentz tele with stock pickups, and to my surprise the Tokai sounded best to my ears. So IMO no replacement is needed....

I don't know. For me a dream guitar is one you play and it blows you right away. Specs and condition are exciting mainly at the moment of buying it online, but quickly forgotten once you get a good one. For all you know, it's a totally boring piece of wood, and it sounds like you have a great 1200 already.

About 7-8 years ago I bought this 1981 EGF-1200 on Yahoo auctions for 68,000 Yen. It had suffered a nasty headstock break, refret, has a non-original bridge, some of the veneer peeling off, some of the inlays lifting up, etc.. Frankly it was mainly curiosity about these guitars, so I threw in the opening bid thinking I could always take out the Dry-Zs. I have many nice LPs and seeing those pics didn't give me any GAS. I remember muttering "^&*(!" to myself when a few days I ended up winning the auction.

Anyway, when the guitar came I quickly realized it was quite special, and there's no way it's going anywhere. Wouldn't even think of trading it for an 1800.

On the other hand, maybe you can find an excuse to travel to that city where they have it for sale and perhaps it's a great one to buy on the cheap.

Something I noticed with one of mine (I forgot which as I have several 1978-1981 ones) is that one of the pots wasn't grounded well, the only electrical contact coming from the contact between the pot and the shielding plate. Decades of oxidation had made the contact bad there, so I took the pots ou...

Ha, I should give people a cue number. :) Really don't think I'll put it back on sale again. I put new strings on it last week, and I'm still surprised how the new brand of strings made it suddenly much more lively again and brought something back I had forgotten was there. I'd been using Newtone an...

Damn, if I were in the market for any kind of LP at all right now, I'd grab this. Love my Vintage line Crews Strat. Agree with you about the nice fretwork, and I think your statement about it being a notch above other high-end brands is fair. At least, it's objective in the sense of them using Braz ...
