Here's a link to my 85 LS60... you can use the pics to compare them to yours. You can see a definitive line where the veneer joins the maple cap. Sometimes it's hard to see. Your 83 may indeed be solid.

Too much oil on any fret board (Ebony or Rosewood) will cause the board to swell and may possibly "pop" a few frets.

Are the pup covers and tailpiece aluminum on these? They appear to be chrome plated and the tailpiece is not lite enough to be aluminum...

Does anyone know what the 81-85 LS60 nuts are made of? ... Insert joke here!
Seriously... The one on my 85 appears to be bone or something of a similar consistency. I can't tell for sure if it's been replaced or not. Did they change the material over the years?

I just got around to reading this thread... my condolences. I know what it's like to get that sick feeling in the pit of your belly when you see your prized guitar take a tumble. I had something similar happen to my Gibby SG 61 reissue!
